Life of a (Backstreet)
Boy

There’s nothing
that makes me prouder than watching Nick perform on stage. Seeing
him and the Boys singing their hearts out to their millions of fiercely
loyal fans reminds me how far my little boy has come since the day I discovered
him singing to me from our backyard.
Although I’ve
borne four children since Nick, and all of them are incredibly unique and
talented in their own ways, he’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
For one thing, he was my firstborn, and he’s the sweetest boy you’d ever
meet.
I’ve never
forgotten the day he was born, a bundle of joy screaming and crying its
way into the world. When I held him in my arms the first time, I
was amazed. I had become a mother and this was my son.
Neither have
I forgotten the day Nick came home and told me that Lou Pearlman wanted
to put together the Backstreet Boys, including him and four others.
I was so proud of him; he was so proud of himself…he had finally taken
a big step into life by himself. And I was there to watch.
Sometimes I
regret that Nick became a celebrity. Of course, I’m always supporting
him, but as a mother…I regret when it’s a beautiful day outside and Nick
is cooped up inside a studio. I regret when I see his fans breezing
from day to day so carefree and enjoying the irresponsibility of youth
while my Nick had to bear the burden of maturity and responsibility before
he should have. Most of all, I regret seeing him come home or call
after a date and tell me that the girl had only liked him because he was
a celebrity. I regret his fame in those moments, when his laughing
blue eyes are downcast and his beautiful voice is sad. But now, I
think he is truly in love with Marissa. I like the girl, I’ll be
the first to admit, and I think she will do him good. There is a
sincerity in her words when she tells me she loves Nick, and there is faith
and hope shining in her eyes when she speaks of Nick. She loves him
and he is happy. Therefore, so am I.
Over the years
I’ve watched him grow from baby Nickolas to big brother Nicky and then
onto Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. Although we both have changed so
much from that momentous day 21 years ago, our relationship has always
been the same. We respect each other, we depend on each other, and
we love each other.

Nick?
What can I say? He’s the coolest older bro I have…also the only.
He rocks. He really cares about what happens to you and well, he
cares about everyone around him. He also plays a mean game of Mortal
Kombat!
Nick’s nice…and
not just the fake-nice you sometimes see in people. He really cares.
He (according to all the girls who know him) is a sweetheart. But
anyway, Nick’s funny and he loves to play practical jokes. Sort of
like me. Sometimes he can be shy I guess…well compared to me!
But he’s more outgoing now that he’s with the Boys.
My big bro
has always been there for me. He really likes to help people.
I mean, really, there’s a lot of things I’ve learned from him. So,
like, thanks Nick. He knows his stuff and he cares enough to help.
But what do
I know? All I can say is, my brother is the best and I love him.

Nick is the
best brother I’ve ever had-no offense Aaron! Seriously though, there’s
something different about a twin brother and an older brother. A
twin is just like…the other half of yourself, while an older brother is
a different person entirely.
Okay, like,
when I was ten, us Carters were all together for Christmas and when we
all saw each other we were all hugging and kissing and whatever.
But when Aaron came up to me, he just slapped me five and said, “Great
to see my Angel again!” That really made me feel better than all
the hugs and kisses because…well…everybody does that. It’s just not
that special. And then, Nick comes home and greets me with a five,
a big grin, and a, “Lookin’ fine, Angel. Lend me your halo for tonight?”
It really made me appreciate him. I mean, Aaron automatically knew
I didn’t like hugs and kisses since he didn’t either and we’re basically
half of the same whole. But when Nick knew the same, it was like,
wow. He really understood me.
Nick’s like
that. He’s really special and I really love him. I’m one of
the three luckiest girls in the world, to have him as my brother.
